In today’s world, emotions are heightened, people are cancelled and social media is a ranting forum. Is humour lost? Where is the satire?
As a woman from one country, to live in another, you are subject to a stereotype. What you SHOULD look like, sound like, act like, eat like (sleep like?) So - how do people imagine ‘us’?
- “OHHHH You’re Italian?!” *mimics accent and gesture, which is wrong by the way*
- “OHHHH You’re British?!” *asks about tea and crumpets. Wrong again.*
- “OHHHH You’re Spanish?!” *asks about Real or Barça. Classic* Yawn.
From observing ‘others’ (In the US court, foreigners are known as “Aliens”) you begin to observe yourself. Who you are, what you like, what you DON’T like. You begin to delve deeper into identity. Of course, it’s personal, but have we forgotten how to look at ourselves and laugh?
In this project, we want to portray ironic female caricatures and personifications of different cultural stereotypes - highlighting the comedy, as well as acknowledging various angles of women being fetishised under the male gaze.
We chose models of different cultural heritage to articulate their origin’s stereotype: and with that, feel the humour and claim the power you hold. We all need a chuckle.
A famous Barbie poster once said: She’s everything, he’s just Ken..
